The Return Of The Scrunchie? Make Like Cressida Bonas And Go Back To The '90s
Ashish S/S 2013- scrunchie inspiration for Cressida's Glastonbury 'do?
Ever since we spied them on the heads of Olympic gymnasts during last summer’s games, we can’t help but notice that the good old 90’s scrunchie really is popping up everywhere. At Ashish’s spring/summer 2013 show, models strutted down the catwalk with effortlessly messy topknots secured in place with white scrunchies, and even Hilary Clinton made headlines last year for wearing this much-debated hair accessory. So, when we spotted Cressida Bonas at Glasto on Saturday wearing a white scrunchie, we reckon this trend might just be on to something. A scrunchie revival, you say? Well, indeed!
Popularised during the mid-'80s, the scrunchie craze reached its peak in the '90s, but quickly became passé as an accessory and has definitely had its fair share of bad rap over the years. Crucified by Carrie Bradshaw in that infamous episode of Sex and the City when she claimed that ‘real’ New York women would never wear a scrunchie, the hair accessory’s popularity dwindled faster than our love for The Body Shop’s White Musk.
Fast forward to 2013 and famous fans of the scrunchie include Sienna Miller, Uma Thurman, Whitney Port and Mary-Kate Olsen to name a few. Even catwalk queen Cara Delevingne was snapped up by quirky fashion brand My Crazy Scrunchie to be the face of their new campaign, definitely putting the ‘cool’ back in scrunchie.
Still not convinced? Ever thought about the benefits wearing a scrunchie has for your hair? As a snag free band, the scrunchie won’t cause breakage, plus available in such a bright range ofcolours (get yourself down to American Apparel), you’ll never be rummaging in your handbag for a little hair tie ever again, and until you need to wear it, a scrunchie looks pretty chic on your wrist, too.
Check out our best scrunchie moments for some '90s-inspiration. If it’s good enough for Cressida and Cara, it’s definitely good for us…
