'I'm really touched by this': Michael Douglas puts marital 'crisis' behind him to lead the winners at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards with Legend title

Michael Douglas put his marriage troubles behind him as he was declared a legend at the GQ Men of the Year Awards on Tuesday night.

The Hollywood star was presented with the award at a dinner attended by celebrities including Lou Reed, Justin Timberlake and Sir Bobby Charlton.

He told the audience as he picked up the coveted title: 'The legend part... it's a polite way of saying this is my third act. I'm looking forward to it relishing especially with this year... It's a lot. Trailed off my film industry has brought me some social conscience back in 1978 with the China Syndrome.'

Michael then jokingly added to laughs and applause from the audience: 'More recently life imitates art... you get a little cancer scare, you open your mouth... I shouldn't say that I'll get in trouble again.

He then summarised; 'I'm really touched by this.'

The event at the Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden, central London, was hosted by comic Rob Brydon and saw Sir Bobby given a lifetime achievement award by current Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand.

Sir Elton John was given the genius award by Wilko Johnson, Doctor Who actor Matt Smith gave Noel Gallagher the icon award while Samuel L. Jackson presented Douglas with his award.

Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones announced last week they were "taking some time apart" to "work on their marriage".

The couple, who married 13 years ago, have two children.

Other winners at the awards included Tom Ford, who was given the designer award by Timberlake, former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens who won the most stylish award, and London mayor Boris Johnson, who won the politician award.

Emma Watson picked up the woman award, Who frontman Roger Daltrey won the editor's choice award, and Pharrell Williams was presented with the performer award by model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

This year's event is the 16th annual awards organised by the men's magazine.

Instead of moping around about his separation from Catherine he donned a tailored midnight blue suit and rocked up to the GQ Men of the Year Awards, in London.

The 68-year-old looked every inch a Hollywood great in his suit as the cameras snapped away at the Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden.

The superstar decided to leave his glitzy Liberace costume firmly in the dress cupboard for the night, and accessorised his sophisticated suit with a crisp white shirt and black bow tie.

He appeared stress-free and unphased by all of the media hype which recently has surrounded him, and has been keeping himself very busy jetting off to the Liberace premiere in Berlin, the
Deauville US Film Festival and Normandy, France. 

On GQ's live blog, Michael Douglas revealed who he thought should get the award for GQ Man of the Year.

Michael Douglas recently revealed that there is no crisis at home and that he and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones 'are fine' and only taking a 'temporary separation'.

He revealed the news in Berlin on Monday while promoting Liberace film Behind the Candelabra.

In response to a question from the media, he said: 'I have a crisis at home? No, I think the press has a crisis. We, we are fine. My wife and I are, are fine.

'We take a temporary separation, but the press, it gives you stuff to write about.'

The world's best and brightest descended on on the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden for the annual GQ Men Of The Year Awards in association with Hugo Boss.

The ceremony is now in its 16th year, the ceremony brings together the best in film, music, TV, books and politics.

But just because it is GQ, does not mean it's a men-only event as Emma Watson, Jessie J, stole the fashion show with their mid-drift revealing outfits, whilst Russell Brand, Rita Ora, Tom Odell, Matt Smith, David Gandy and Eddie Redmayne were also all at the bash.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas Separate

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have been through a lot in their 13 years of marriage, but have they finally reached a breaking point? It looks like it.

"Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage," reps for the "Behind the Candelabra" actor, 68, and "RED 2" actress, 43, confirm to omg!. "There will be no further comment."

The statement follows People magazine's new cover story, which reports that the couple has separated.

"They're taking a break," one insider tells the magazine, which has a close relationship with the twosome, exclusively covering their 2000 wedding. A family friend confirmed the news, saying, “The stress has taken a toll on their marriage."

However, neither star has filed for divorce or legal separation. For now they are living separate lives with Douglas enjoying a holiday aboard a yacht off the coast of Sardinia, Italy, and Zeta-Jones home in New York with their children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.

Since the couple married, they have endured many obstacles, including Douglas's throat cancer diagnosis in 2010, Zeta-Jones's ongoing struggle with bipolar II disorder, and Douglas's son Cameron's drug addiction and incarceration.

(Splash News)Zeta-Jones and Douglas haven't been photographed together since April 22, which was just prior to her most recent stint in rehabto control her mental health battle. After treatment, she made a triumphant return to the red carpet to promote "RED 2," but she did so solo.

Douglas also went stag to the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April, the "Behind the Candelabra" premiere in May, and the One Centennial Sensation at Hudson Theatre in June. He was also snapped golfing without his wife in Sardinia earlier this month. While they've been together, Zeta-Jones typically hits the links with Douglas.

The actor also did some damage control after his comments about HPV possibly causing his cancer made big headlines in June. He issued a statement clarifying that he was not saying he got the sexually transmitted disease from his wife, nor does she have it.

In July, Zeta-Jones candidly admitted thatDouglas's cancer was a "trigger" for her bipolar II disorder.

Despite their personal troubles, they remain focused on their children. A family friend told People, "They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens."
